How We Do it
The focal point of the project is to provide objective, scientific and mathematically sound methods of coaching evaluation that respect the history of the game, but at the same time can be used at all levels of football to provide accurate ways of assessing current and future coaching performance. For every season, we use various factors that best encapsulate all relevant coaching performances on a team and compute a final score (from 0 to 100) for every coach. The passing grade of 70 roughly corresponds to a winning season, 80 to a playoff appearance, and 90+ to playoff success. The ability a coach has to share in his team’s success is measured according to his position, and his rank among peers.
The formulas we use to assess coaching performances strive to provide an accurate depiction of the current state of the game, but they have been set up so that they align well with the history of football, which means that they can also be used to analyze it, retrospectively. Coaching results from all levels of football are considered, showing how important those lower-level experiences can be.
